Videos are a powerful, dynamic tool to connect with your audience. People love videos. In fact, I suspect that most people will skip my copy and watch the embedded video because it is more entertaining. Everyone dreams of creating a viral video on YouTube and becoming the next Bieber. However, you do not need to be a teenage heartthrob to gain attention on YouTube; you just need a little creativity.
Local Brewery Makes a Viral YouTube Video
Mother’s Brewing Company, a brewery based in Springfield, Mo., is making dreams come true with their rendition of the opening credits to the TV classic, “Laverne & Shirley.” After sharing it on their Facebook page, it quickly began to spread to other organization’s pages including KY3 News. After about one week, the video has garnered over 28,000 views. That is pretty good for a new business in a mid-sized town in the midwest.
What Mother’s Did Right
- They Tapped into Nostalgia. “Laverne & Shirley” is a TV classic that brings many of us back to our childhoods. I remember watching Laverne & Shirley on my dad’s lap when I was a little girl. Nostalgia is powerful. To quote Donald Draper from the TW show “Mad Men”: “Nostalgia – it’s delicate, but potent. Teddy told me that in Greek, ‘nostalgia’ literally means ‘the pain from an old wound.’ It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. It let’s us travel the way a child travels – around and around, and back home again, to a place where we know are loved.”
- They Paid Attention to Detail. If you go back and watch the original opening, Mother’s recreated the opening frame for frame. It is incredible.
- They Stayed in their Genre. They are a brewery, so they picked something set in a brewery. It is simplistic and genius. In the Springfield News-Leader, Jeremy Wicks, Marketing Director, said that the video stays true to the heart of their business. “Our brand is really fun and kind of humorous, witty, and a little bit irreverent,” he said. “If we didn’t feel that it really fit what we were trying to build, we wouldn’t have done it.”
- They Had Fun. Jeff and Jeremy sure looked like they were having fun remaking a classic, and it showed.
I absolutely adore this video. I think that I have contributed about 15 of those 28,000 views. Anytime you can be a bit creative in your social media marketing, it will also help your business.
